Clay mixed with hay object on wooden construction
At present, insulation boards made of Styrofoam and similar plastics are in high demand in many countries. Enormous quantities are used to wrap houses with them. In a few decades' time, these oil based materials will have to be disposed of as mountains of hazardous waste. Curiously enough, hardly any natural materials are used for insulation. Folke Köbberling’s wall element is standing freely in the room as a statement. It appears like a counter project to the architecture of the House of Arts. The object made of clay, hay and wood is flat on the one side and "hairy" on the other. It stands in visual and tactile contrast to the building materials of the 1960s. It will presumably take until the end of the exhibition until the sculpture has dried up completely. Until then, there is another interesting aspect to this work, the smell of the material mix. After the exhibition, all the material can either be reused, or returned to where it came from, in the clay quarry in the immediate vicinity.
Derzeit sind Dämmplatten aus Styropor und ähnlichen Kunststoffen in vielen Ländern hoch im Kurs. Gewaltige Mengen werden verwendet, um Häuser damit einzuwickeln. In wenigen Jahrzehnten werden diese Materialien als Berge von Sondermüll zu entsorgen sein. Kurioser Weise werden zur Dämmung kaum Naturmaterialien eingesetzt. Das Wandelement von Folke Köbberling steht als Behauptung frei im Raum. Es wirkt wie ein Gegenentwurf zur Architektur des House of Arts. Das Objekt aus Lehm, Heu und Holz ist auf der einen Seite flach und auf der anderen Seite „behaart“, es steht im visuellen und taktilen Kontrast zu den Baustoffen aus den 1960er Jahren. Vermutlich wird es bis zum Ende der Ausstellung dauern, bis die Skulptur durchgetrocknet ist. Bis dahin gibt es auch einen weiteren interessanten Aspekt an dieser Arbeit, den Geruch der Materialmischung. Nach der Ausstellung kann das gesamte Material entweder nochmals verwendet werden oder es wird dahin zurückgebracht woher es kommt, in die Lehmgrube aus der unmittelbaren Umgebung.
